Topshop’s campaign is all about spreading the anti-cliché Christmas cheer – dressing the unexpected way for the party season. It’s shot by London photographer Giampaolo Sgura, and styled by Topshop’s Creative Director Kate Phelan.
The campaign stars 9 models, notably Kate Moss’s younger sister Lottie, and Victoria’s Secret angel Stella Maxwell, who are dressed for what may be the coolest Christmas party ever. The campaign features some key 2016 trends, such as underwear-as-outerwear, velvet suits, block heels and sheer materials. Jewel tones make it very seasonal, and glitter/metallics retain that unique Christmas party vibe.
One of the most talked about Christmas campaigns in 2016 has been Burberry’s advert-cross-feature film epic. The advert portrays the life of Burberry’s creator and founder, Thomas Burberry, and is aptly titled The Tale of Thomas Burberry. It is a 3 minute piece in the form of a trailer as though designed for a future film featuring stars Sienna Miller, Dominic West, Lily James and Domhnall Gleeson. Gleeson plays Thomas Burberry himself, with Sienna Miller as his wife. Lily James plays a fictional pilot based on Betty Kirby-Green, who flew from England to Cape Town dressed in Burberry, in 1937, and Dominic West portrays Ernest Shackleton, a polar explorer who completed three expeditions wearing Burberry.
The film is glossy, festive, and impeccably written and directed by Matt Charman and Asif Kapadia respectively. Everyone in it is, of course, beautifully dressed in Burberry designs. There’s shots of icy snowflakes and lavish Christmas parties, as well as plenty of drama and romance. It certainly makes the case for a full length feature film about Thomas Burberry and is a wonderfully crafted and thoughtful Christmas campaign.
Not to be outshined by anyone, Kylie created a whole new range of Christmas-themed makeup products. The collection consists of new Christmas-themed lip kits, metal mattes, glosses, kyshadow palettes, kyliner and creme shadow, with a new make-up bag, a set of brushes and even furry stocking available. Besides all this make up-heaven that Kylie provided for our Christmas, she also advertised it in the most Kylie way.
From its dramatic countdown and release on snapchat to painstakingly posed Instagram shots, the collection looks very Christmassy. Each lip item comes with specially designed Christmas packaging which can hang on your tree like a bauble. The colour scheme is also a festive combination of silver and red, with silvery packaging, a silver make-up bag, and white fluffy stocking.
Gigi Hadid sparkles (almost literally) in this 30 second advert. Set on a ‘Hilfiger Holiday Voyage’ this advert is beautifully nautical and the navy and gold colour scheme is seasonal yet chic. Gigi is joined by Brazilian model Francisco Lachowski as they host an on board party with musicians playing glamourous, jazzy music.
The ready-to-wear collection is sequined, slick and cool in navy and gold. There are flowy maxi skirts and cropped jackets and jumpers to help keep the cold out. The advert feels like a modern take on a more traditional nautical theme and updates it to create a glitzy, glamourous Christmas feel.
